e-KYC Services Introduced in Branch Post Offices
In Phase-I, the Department has enabled the following Aadhaar-based services in Branch Post Offices:
- Conversion of existing Customer Information Files (CIFs) into Aadhaar-based e-KYC CIFs through biometric authentication.
- Acceptance of deposits up to ₹50,000 in Post Office Savings Accounts (POSA), Recurring Deposit (RD) Accounts, and Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts (SSA) without the need for a pay-in-slip.
- Withdrawal of up to ₹20,000 from POSA accounts through biometric authentication without submitting a withdrawal form.
These facilities are available only for single accounts a are not applicable to joint or minor accounts.
BO Interoperability Introduced
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of Branch Office (BO) Interoperability. Earlier, Branch Post Offices could perform transactions only in accounts maintained within their own BO. With the new system, Aadhaar-authenticated customers can perform transactions in eligible accounts standing at any post office across the country, irrespective of the Branch Office where the account is maintained.
Mobile Number Mandatory
The Department has reiterated that mobile number linkage is mandatory for Aadhaar-authenticated transactions. Customers initiating e-KYC services must have their mobile number linked with their POSB account.
Importantly, from 1 September 2026, transactions through the DREAM application will not be permitted in accounts that are not linked with a mobile number.
e-KYC Conversion Process
Customers whose Aadhaar number and mobile number are already linked with their CIF can convert their account to e-KYC status through biometric authentication. During the process, customer details such as name, date of birth, gender, and address will be fetched directly from the UIDAI database after obtaining digital consent.
If Aadhaar details are incomplete or do not match the existing records, customers will be required to update their Aadhaar information before availing Aadhaar-based transaction services.
Paperless Deposits and Withdrawals
The new system allows:
Deposits
- Up to ₹50,000 per day in POSA, RD, and SSA accounts through biometric authentication.
- No pay-in-slip required.
- Instant SMS confirmation after successful transactions.
Withdrawals
- Up to ₹20,000 per day from POSA accounts through biometric authentication.
- No withdrawal form required.
- Instant SMS alerts sent to registered mobile numbers.
For higher-value transactions, the existing paper-based procedure will continue.
Aadhaar Privacy and Security Measures
The Department has once again emphasized strict compliance with Aadhaar privacy guidelines. All post offices must ensure that Aadhaar numbers are recorded only in masked form (XXXX-XXXX-XXXX). If any document contains an unmasked Aadhaar number, the first eight digits must be masked immediately.
Mandatory Training for Staff
To ensure smooth implementation, a dedicated training course titled "Introduction to e-KYC Functionalities in the DREAM Application for GDS" has been made available on the Dak Karmayogi and iGOT platforms. All concerned staff members have been advised to complete the training.
Conclusion
The introduction of e-KYC transactions and Branch Office interoperability marks a significant step in the modernization of Post Office Savings Bank services. By enabling Aadhaar-authenticated, paperless transactions and allowing customers to access their accounts from any Branch Post Office, the Department of Posts is enhancing convenience, accessibility, and digital banking services for millions of customers across rural India.
