Department of Posts Launches Aadhaar-Based e-KYC Transactions in Branch Post Offices

The Department of Posts has issued SB Order No. 06/2026 vide File No. 25-01/2018-FS-CBS dated 22.06.2026, introducing e-KYC operations and interoperability of Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) accounts in Branch Post Offices (BOs) across the country. The new facility has been made operational on a pan-India basis from 22 June 2026 and represents a major step towards paperless and Aadhaar-enabled banking services in rural areas.

e-KYC Services Introduced in Branch Post Offices

As part of Phase-I implementation through the Digital Rural Enterprise Application for Mobiles (DREAM), the Department has enabled the following services:

  • Conversion of existing Customer Information Files (CIFs) into Aadhaar-based e-KYC CIFs through biometric authentication.
  • Acceptance of deposits up to ₹50,000 in POSA, RD and Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts without submission of a pay-in-slip.
  • Withdrawal of up to ₹20,000 from POSA accounts through biometric authentication without a withdrawal form.
  • Facility available only for single accounts and not for minor or joint accounts.

For transactions exceeding the prescribed limits, the existing paper-based procedure will continue.

BO Interoperability Introduced

One of the most important features introduced through this order is Branch Office Interoperability. Earlier, Branch Post Offices could perform transactions only in accounts maintained in the same BO. With the new system, Aadhaar-authenticated customers can now perform eligible transactions in accounts maintained in any post office, irrespective of where the account is held.

This move is expected to significantly improve customer convenience and service accessibility.

Mobile Number Mandatory for e-KYC Transactions

The Department has reiterated that mobile number linkage is mandatory for customers wishing to avail e-KYC and Aadhaar-authenticated transactions.

Further, it has been clarified that from 1 September 2026, no transactions through the DREAM application will be allowed in accounts that are not linked with a mobile number. Circles have been instructed to launch campaigns to ensure mobile number seeding in POSB accounts.

Aadhaar-Based Paperless Transactions

Customers whose Aadhaar and mobile numbers are linked with their CIF can convert their accounts into e-KYC accounts after biometric authentication and digital consent.

The system will fetch customer details directly from UIDAI, including:

  • Name
  • Date of Birth
  • Gender
  • Address with PIN Code

This will facilitate secure and paperless transactions while reducing paperwork and manual verification.

Strict Aadhaar Privacy Guidelines

The Department has once again emphasized the need to protect customer privacy. All post offices must ensure that Aadhaar numbers are recorded only in masked format. If any document contains an unmasked Aadhaar number, the first eight digits must be masked immediately.

Training for GDS and Postal Staff

To ensure smooth implementation, a dedicated training course titled "Introduction to e-KYC Functionalities in the DREAM Application for GDS" has been made available on the Dak Karmayogi and iGOT platforms. All concerned officials and GDS employees have been directed to complete the mandatory training.

Conclusion

The introduction of e-KYC operations and BO interoperability marks a significant milestone in the digital transformation of Post Office Savings Bank services. By enabling Aadhaar-authenticated deposits, withdrawals, and account access from any Branch Post Office, the Department of Posts aims to deliver faster, more secure, and customer-friendly banking services, particularly in rural and remote areas.
