Revolutionizing Postal Services: India Post Introduces Drone Delivery

In a significant step towards modernizing postal services, the Department of Posts has launched a drone-based mail and parcel delivery service in Himachal Pradesh under the leadership of Union Minister for Communications and DoNER, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia. The initiative was inaugurated on 12 June 2026 between Mandi Head Post Office and Rehdhar Branch Post Office, marking a new era of technology-driven postal connectivity.

The project aims to improve the delivery of mail and parcels in remote and difficult terrains where conventional transportation methods are often time-consuming and challenging. The initiative was conceptualized following feedback received from Gramin Dak Sevaks and postal employees, who emphasized the need for faster and more efficient communication in rural and inaccessible regions.

The Department of Posts plans to expand drone-based postal services to nearly 150 identified routes across Himachal Pradesh and Assam over the next few months. The Mandi–Rehdhar route is the first among these routes to become operational.

One of the most remarkable achievements of this initiative is the reduction in delivery time. While reaching Rehdhar Branch Post Office from Mandi Head Post Office through traditional means takes more than two hours, the drone service completes the journey in approximately seven minutes. This dramatic improvement will help ensure quicker delivery of essential mail, parcels, and government communications.

The launch of drone-based postal services reflects India Post's commitment to leveraging advanced technology for better public service delivery. It also demonstrates the Department's dedication to strengthening connectivity, enhancing efficiency, and bringing postal services closer to citizens living in remote areas.

This innovative initiative is expected to revolutionize postal logistics in hilly and difficult regions, making mail delivery faster, more reliable, and more accessible than ever before.
