Gramin Dak Sevak Vacancies 2026: State-Wise Sanctioned Strength, Working Strength and Vacancies

The Department of Posts has provided state-wise details of the sanctioned strength, persons in position and vacancies of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) as on 20 July 2026.

The figures are part of the details furnished in reply to Part (b) of Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1800 regarding the sanctioned strength, persons in position and vacancies of GDS across different States.

Based on the state-wise figures in the annexure, the combined figures for the 28 States are:

  • Total Sanctioned Strength: 3,26,950
  • Persons in Position: 2,77,354
  • Total Vacancies: 49,596

The figures are as on 20.07.2026.

Uttar Pradesh Has the Highest Number of Vacancies

Among the States listed, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of GDS vacancies, with 6,837 vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 37,844. The number of persons in position is 31,007.

Tamil Nadu follows with 4,277 vacancies, while West Bengal has 4,184 vacancies.

Other States with more than 2,000 vacancies include:

  • Madhya Pradesh – 3,085
  • Bihar – 2,962
  • Rajasthan – 2,921
  • Maharashtra – 2,727
  • Jharkhand – 2,361
  • Odisha – 2,304
  • Kerala – 2,239

States with Lower Number of Vacancies

Some States have comparatively fewer vacancies. Nagaland has 133 vacancies, followed by Sikkim with 139 vacancies and Tripura with 243 vacancies.

Haryana has 337 vacancies, while Manipur has 391 vacancies.
