India Post Launches 10% Special Discount Scheme for Rakhi Mail Through Speed Post
In a customer-friendly initiative ahead of Raksha Bandhan 2026, the Department of Posts has announced a Special Discount Scheme for Rakhi Mail sent through Inland Speed Post (Document) service. The new scheme offers a 10% discount on postage charges to encourage more retail customers to use India Post for sending Rakhi to their loved ones across the country. The scheme will come into effect from 12 August 2026.

10% Discount on Rakhi Mail
As per the Office Memorandum issued by the Mail Operations Division on 03 August 2026, customers booking Rakhi Mail under Inland Speed Post (Document) will receive a 10% discount on postage charges. The discount applies only to postage charges and does not cover value-added services (VAS).
Eligibility and Conditions
To avail of the discount, customers must comply with the following conditions:
- The words "Rakhi Mail" must be clearly written on the front of the envelope.
- The envelope must be presented at the post office booking counter.
- The Counter Postal Assistant will verify that the envelope contains a Rakhi through external examination only without opening it.
- A maximum of five Speed Post Rakhi Mail articles can be booked by one customer at a time.
- The scheme is available only for retail customers booking at post office counters.
- Bulk and corporate customers under BNPL arrangements are not eligible for this discount.
System and Booking Process
The Rakhi Mail booking facility will be activated in the booking system 15 days before Raksha Bandhan every year. During booking, the Counter PA will select the "Rakhi Mail" option in the retail booking screen, after which the system will automatically apply the 10% discount on eligible postage charges. The receipt will clearly display the base tariff, discount, GST, value-added service charges (if any), and the final payable amount.
Accounting and Implementation
The Department has prescribed Account Code "Deduct Discount/Rebate 1201012800" for accounting the discount. GST will be calculated after applying the discount, and manual accounting entries in discount-related account codes are not permitted except through the system. A consolidated report on Rakhi Mail traffic, revenue, and discounts availed will also be generated for monitoring purposes.
