Government Clarifies Timeline for 8th Central Pay Commission Report in Rajya Sabha
The Government has clarified in the Rajya Sabha that the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) will submit its recommendations within 18 months from the date of its constitution, providing an update on the progress of the Commission's work.

Replying to Unstarred Question No. 1036 raised by Shri Javed Ali Khan on 28 July 2026, Minister of State for Finance Shri Pankaj Chaudhary informed the House that the Government had notified the constitution of the 8th Central Pay Commission through a Resolution dated 3 November 2025, along with its Terms of Reference (ToR).
The Minister stated that, as per the Resolution, the 8th Central Pay Commission will devise its own procedure for carrying out its work. The Government further clarified that the Terms of Reference do not require the Commission to keep the Government informed about the number of meetings held, consultations with employees' unions, or the recommendations under consideration during its deliberations.
The Rajya Sabha question had also sought details regarding consultations with employees' unions and whether any demand had been made to increase the number of family units from three to five, including parents, for calculating the fitment factor. In response, the Government stated that such matters fall within the Commission's independent functioning and are not required to be reported to the Government during the consultation process.
Most importantly, the Government reiterated that the 8th Central Pay Commission is expected to submit its recommendations within 18 months of its constitution, after which the Government will examine the report for implementation.
The clarification provides an important update for Central Government employees and pensioners, confirming that the Commission is functioning independently under its notified Terms of Reference and remains on track to submit its recommendations within the prescribed timeframe.
