Why is the Name Being Reviewed?
According to the communication issued by the PE-II Section, Department of Posts, the proposal originated from the Personnel Division during the process of amending the Recruitment Rules for the Postal Service Group 'B' cadre.
The Directorate observed that the existing title "Postal Service Group 'B'" may be ambiguous because the term "Service" generally refers to a classification of service rather than the name of a specific post or cadre. Therefore, it has been considered necessary to examine whether a more appropriate and meaningful nomenclature should be adopted.
Group 'B' Officers Serve Across Multiple Establishments
The letter highlights that officers belonging to the Group 'B' cadre are deployed across a wide range of establishments, including:
- Post Offices
- Railway Mail Service (RMS)
- Parcel Sorting Divisions (PSDs)
- Business Post Centres (BPCs)
- Circle, Regional and Divisional Offices
- Various other postal establishments
Considering the diverse nature of their responsibilities, the Directorate has emphasized that the views of all Postal Circles are essential before taking any final decision.
Postal Circles Asked to Suggest Alternative Names
All Postal Circles have been requested to submit:
- Comments on the proposal.
- Suitable alternative nomenclature(s) for the cadre.
- Detailed justification for the suggested names, keeping in view the functional diversity and responsibilities of Group 'B' officers.
15 Days' Time to Respond
The Department has directed all Postal Circles to furnish their comments within 15 days from the date of issue of the letter to facilitate further examination of the proposal.
Why This Matters
Although the proposal is only for changing the name of the cadre, it reflects the Department's intention to adopt a nomenclature that better represents the roles and responsibilities of Group 'B' officers serving in various postal establishments across India.
At present, no decision has been taken regarding the new name, and the Department will finalize the matter after considering the suggestions received from all Postal Circles.
