No Need for Local Server Infrastructure
According to the Department, it has been observed during visits by senior officers that server room setups are still being maintained at several Post Offices and field locations.
However, the Directorate clarified that:
- APT is now a browser-based application
- There is no requirement for local server infrastructure at Post Offices
- Core applications like:
- APT
- Finacle
- McCamish
are all accessed through browser interfaces.
CEPT Clarification on BCP Solution
The communication also mentions that CEPT has informed that even for implementation of BCP (Business Continuity Plan) solutions, any available desktop system can handle the local database requirements.
Hence, maintaining dedicated server rooms at field offices is no longer necessary.
Directions Issued to All Circles
All Chief Postmasters General have been instructed to:
- Discontinue server room spaces at Post Offices and Mail Offices
- Utilize the freed-up space for office use or other productive purposes

The move is expected to help optimize office space utilization and reduce unnecessary infrastructure maintenance at field units.
Objective of the Decision
The rationalization initiative aims to:
- Improve space management in post offices
- Reduce maintenance burden
- Promote efficient utilization of departmental infrastructure
- Align field offices with the new centralized browser-based technology ecosystem
The order has been issued with the approval of the competent authority.
