Post Offices to Ensure Smooth Banking Services During Proposed Nationwide Bank Strike

The Department of Posts has advised all Postal Circles to make advance arrangements to ensure the smooth delivery of Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) services during the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled from 28 September to 30 September 2026.

In a communication dated 23 September 2026, Rajul Bhatt, Deputy Director General (FS & PBI), Department of Posts, referred to the proposed strike by the United Forum of Bank Unions and other unions/associations of the banking industry. The Department has noted that the strike may affect normal banking operations across the country and could result in increased demand for banking and financial transactions through Post Offices during the strike period.

Advance Arrangements at Post Offices

The Department has asked Postal Circles to make necessary advance arrangements to handle the anticipated increase in transactions and ensure uninterrupted customer services.

1. Adequate Cash Availability

Post Offices have been advised to maintain sufficient cash at counters to meet the anticipated increase in counter and AePS transactions during the bank strike period.

2. Security Arrangements for Surplus Cash

Appropriate security arrangements are to be made for the safe custody and handling of surplus cash. Consultation with the District Administration may be undertaken wherever required.

3. Pension Disbursement and RD Collections

Suitable arrangements are to be put in place to facilitate pension disbursement and Recurring Deposit (RD) collections, ensuring that customers can continue to access these services smoothly.

4. Cash Availability at ATMs

Postal Circles have also been advised to ensure adequate availability of cash at ATMs to facilitate withdrawal requirements, including those of pensioners.

5. Customer Awareness Regarding Strike

Post Offices have been advised to display information regarding the proposed nationwide bank strike. Customers are also to be informed about the potential delays in cheque clearance arising during the strike period.

Close Monitoring During Strike Period

The Department has requested all Postal Circles to closely monitor the situation throughout the strike period and take suitable measures as required to prevent disruption of services to customers.

The advance preparedness is aimed at ensuring that Post Offices are equipped to handle any additional demand for POSB, IPPB and related banking services that may arise between 28 and 30 September 2026.

The communication has been addressed to all Heads of Postal Circles for necessary action.
