IP LDCE 2026 Updated Syllabus and Exam Pattern Released – Complete Paper-Wise Details
The updated syllabus and examination pattern for the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE) for promotion to the post of Inspector Posts (IP) has been issued as per Department of Posts letter F.No. DE-12/5/2026-DE-DOP dated 14 August 2026.

The updated document provides the detailed pattern for Paper I, Paper II and Paper III, including marks, number of questions, duration, qualifying criteria and the subjects to be covered for the examination.
IP LDCE 2026 – Examination Pattern
The examination will consist of three papers:

Paper I contains 125 objective-type questions, while Paper III contains 150 MCQs. Paper II is a descriptive paper covering Noting, Drafting and Drafting of a Charge Sheet.
Qualifying Marks
For the General Category, candidates are required to secure:
- 40% in each paper, subject to
- 45% overall average
For SC/ST/PwBD candidates:
- 33% in each paper, subject to
- 38% overall average
The examination will be conducted without the aid of books.
Important Cut-off Date for Circulars and Orders
A particularly important point for candidates is the syllabus cut-off provision.
Circulars, orders and guidelines issued up to 31 December of the year preceding the year of examination will form part of the syllabus.
However, for the Annual Report and Book of Information, the latest report and information available/published on the Department of Posts website will be considered.
Paper I – 250 Marks
Paper I covers a wide range of postal laws, rules, manuals, schemes, technology and departmental instructions.

- The Post Office Act, 2023
- Government Savings Promotion Act, 1873
- Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 and amendments, particularly in relation to AML/CFT norms
- Consumer Protection Act, 2019

2. Rules and Savings Schemes
Candidates are required to study the Post Office Rules, 2024 and Post Office Regulations, 2024, along with the Government Savings Promotion General Rules and various National Savings Schemes.
The syllabus specifically includes schemes such as:

- National Savings Recurring Deposit Scheme, 2019
- National Savings Time Deposit Scheme, 2019
- National Savings Monthly Income Account Scheme, 2019

The syllabus covers the Post Office Life Insurance Rules, 2011 and amendments, compiled as SANKALAN, along with subsequent instructions and guidelines, if any.

A substantial portion of Paper I covers Postal Manuals and operational rules, including:

Paper II – 50 Marks
Paper II is a descriptive and practical writing paper consisting of three components.
1. Noting – 15 Marks
Candidates have to write a note of approximately 200 words on a given topic.
2. Drafting – 15 Marks
Candidates have to draft a communication of approximately 200 words on a given topic.
3. Drafting of Charge Sheet – 20 Marks
Candidates have to prepare a Draft Major Penalty Charge Sheet.
Therefore, candidates preparing for Paper II should focus not only on subject knowledge but also on official noting, drafting and disciplinary proceedings-related drafting skills.
Paper III – 300 Marks
Paper III carries the highest weightage, with 300 marks and 150 MCQs.
The syllabus begins with the Constitution of India, covering the Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles of State Policy, Fundamental Duties and specified constitutional Articles, including Articles 124–147, 214–232, 311, 338, 338(a) and 338(b).
