India Post Launches Upgraded Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa Apps to Accelerate Digital Transformation
India Post has taken another major step towards becoming a modern, citizen-centric and technology-enabled organisation with the launch of upgraded Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa mobile applications, along with the inauguration of 14 renovated Post Office buildings across the country.
The initiatives were launched on 24 August 2026 by Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, and Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development.
The initiatives are aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and aim to improve last-mile service delivery, enhance citizen experience and accelerate the digital transformation of India Post.
Dak MITRA: Digital Platform for Branch Post Offices
The upgraded Dak MITRA (Mobile Interface for Transactions & Rural Assistance) application has been developed indigenously by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT) under the Advanced Postal Technology (APT) platform as part of the Department of Posts' DoP IT 2.0 Modernization initiative.
Dak MITRA serves as a unified operational platform for more than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices and is deployed on Android-based handheld devices.
The application enables Branch Postmasters to carry out several postal and financial services digitally and in real time.
Key features of Dak MITRA
- Paperless and real-time mail booking
- OTP-based doorstep delivery
- Core Banking Services
- Insurance-related services
- Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC
- Cash deposits and withdrawals
- PLI/RPLI premium collection at customers' doorsteps
- Digital transaction processing through handheld devices
The upgraded platform is expected to significantly reduce dependence on paper-based processes while enabling Branch Post Offices to provide faster and more convenient services to citizens, particularly in rural and remote areas.
Dak Sewa App Brings Postal Services Together
The Dak Sewa mobile application provides citizens with access to multiple postal services through a single digital platform.
The app offers 24x7 access to services such as:
- Article and consignment tracking
- Postal booking
- Complaints and grievance services
- Post Office locator
- PIN code locator
- Financial calculators
- Other postal service utilities
One of the major highlights is its support for 23 Indian languages through BHASHINI, making digital postal services more accessible to citizens across different regions of the country.
Modernisation of Post Office Buildings
Alongside the launch of Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa, the Department of Posts is also transforming its physical infrastructure.
The Department has collaborated with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi, to develop a Design Manual for modernising Post Offices.
The design focuses on:
- Citizen-centric service delivery
- Accessibility
- Operational efficiency
- Technology readiness
- Improved customer experience
- Standardisation with flexibility for local requirements
The design follows a five-zone spatial framework comprising the Urban Interface Zone, Open Access Forecourt, Open Access Services, Service and Transaction Zone, and Staff Zones.
14 Renovated Post Offices Inaugurated
As part of the Proof of Concept, 40 Post Offices across 17 States were identified for transformation using the SPA Design Manual.
According to the Department of Posts:
- 27 Post Offices have already been completed.
- 4 Post Offices had already been inaugurated.
- 14 additional renovated Post Offices were inaugurated on 24 August 2026.

The 14 Post Offices inaugurated on August 24 are located at Patliputra (Bihar), Vasant Kunj (Delhi), Sector-56 Gurugram (Haryana), Kakurgachi (Kolkata), Vidisha and Sanchi (Madhya Pradesh), Shillong (Meghalaya), Kandivali West (Mumbai), Shankar Nagar and Ayodhya Nagar (Nagpur), Nirala Nagar, Gomti Nagar and Indira Nagar (Lucknow), and Prayagraj.
Modern Facilities for Citizens
The renovated Post Offices feature a distinctive India Post identity, improved signage, citizen-friendly layouts, dedicated service areas and technology-enabled facilities.
Where feasible, the modernised facilities include:
- 24x7 Sewa facilities
- ATMs
- After-hours booking
- Smart parcel services
- Improved seating and customer areas
- Better accessibility and movement
- Technology-enabled service counters
These improvements are intended to make Post Offices more convenient and efficient while retaining the trust and accessibility associated with India Post.
Technology + Infrastructure = New-Age India Post
The launch of upgraded Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa, together with the modernisation of Post Office buildings, represents a significant transformation of both the digital and physical postal network.
While Dak MITRA equips the postal workforce with modern digital tools for doorstep and Branch Post Office operations, Dak Sewa provides citizens with convenient digital access to postal services.
Together, these initiatives support the broader objectives of Digital India, Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047, while strengthening India Post's role as a trusted, accessible and technology-enabled public service institution.
