Department of Posts Enhances SDBS Benefits for GDS Subscribers
GDS SDBS (NPS-Lite) Subscribers Get Major Relief: Full Withdrawal Allowed Up to ₹2 Lakh
The Department of Posts has announced a significant benefit for Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) covered under the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme (SDBS) – NPS Lite. As per the latest communication issued by the GDS Section, Dak Bhawan, New Delhi, the minimum accumulated wealth threshold for compulsory annuity purchase at the time of discharge has been enhanced.
The decision follows amendments made by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) to provide greater flexibility to NPS and NPS-Lite subscribers. Under the revised regulations, if the accumulated pension wealth of a subscriber is ₹2 lakh or less, the subscriber will now have the option to withdraw the entire accumulated amount as a lump-sum payment.
Previously, subscribers with smaller pension accumulations were required to purchase an annuity, which often resulted in limited pension benefits. The revised framework addresses this concern by allowing complete withdrawal of the accumulated corpus in eligible cases, ensuring better financial flexibility and convenience for retiring GDS employees.
The Department has informed that the enhanced limit has already been integrated into the CRA Protean system and is now operational. All concerned authorities have been directed to disseminate the revised provisions among GDS employees so that eligible beneficiaries can avail themselves of the benefit at the time of discharge.
This progressive reform is expected to provide substantial relief to thousands of GDS personnel by enabling easier access to their retirement savings and reducing the burden of mandatory annuitization for small pension accumulations.
