The change follows an amendment to the relevant regulations by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), increasing the minimum accumulated pension wealth threshold for compulsory purchase of an annuity.

New ₹2 Lakh Threshold

Under the revised provision, if the accumulated pension wealth of the subscriber is equal to or less than ₹2,00,000, the subscriber will have the option to withdraw the entire accumulated pension wealth as a lump sum.

The revised threshold provides greater flexibility to GDS employees with relatively small accumulated pension corpus.

Key Benefits for GDS Employees

The revised provision offers the following benefits:

  • Greater financial flexibility for subscribers with a small accumulated pension corpus.
  • No compulsory annuity purchase where the accumulated pension wealth is ₹2 lakh or less.
  • Option to withdraw the entire amount in a lump sum.
  • Greater convenience at the time of discharge or retirement.

Revised Limit

₹2,00,000 or less accumulated pension wealth = Full Withdrawal Option

The change is intended to address concerns relating to compulsory annuitisation of small accumulated pension amounts and provide greater ease and flexibility to GDS employees.

Implementation

As indicated in the communication, the enhanced limits under SDBS – NPS Lite have been integrated by CRA Protean. The revised limits may be communicated to all concerned, including GDS employees.

The update has been issued with the approval of the competent authority.

Important for GDS Employees

GDS employees covered under SDBS–NPS Lite may take note of the revised ₹2 lakh threshold and consider the applicable withdrawal option at the time of discharge or retirement.
