India Post Extends BYOD Scheme to Branch Offices: BPMs, ABPMs & Delivery Staff to Get ₹500 Monthly Reimbursement
In a significant move to strengthen digital operations at the grassroots level, the Department of Posts has extended the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Scheme to Branch Offices (BOs) across the country. The decision enables eligible Branch Office officials to use their personal Android smartphones for official work where smartphones have not been provided by India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) or the Department.

The order, issued by the Mail Operations Division on 05 August 2026, is in continuation of the existing BYOD Scheme introduced for departmental offices and delivery centres. Under the extended scheme, Branch Postmasters (BPMs), Assistant Branch Postmasters (ABPMs), and other eligible delivery staff working in Branch Offices can participate in the scheme, subject to the prescribed eligibility criteria, device specifications, and departmental guidelines.
₹500 Monthly Reimbursement for Eligible Staff
Officials enrolled under the BYOD Scheme will receive a monthly reimbursement of ₹500, comprising:
- ₹300 towards smartphone usage.
- ₹200 towards Data, Voice and SMS charges.
The order clarifies that the reimbursement will be credited directly by India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) into the eligible employee's IPPB Savings Account. The Department of Posts will not process reimbursement claims relating to Branch Office staff.
Existing BYOD Scheme Continues for Departmental Offices
The Department has clarified that the existing BYOD Scheme applicable to Departmental Post Offices and Delivery Centres will continue without any changes. Reimbursement under the existing scheme will continue to be booked under the prescribed Head of Account.
CEPT Asked to Enable BYOD Reimbursement in APT 2.0
The Directorate noted that several Postal Circles have reported delays in processing BYOD reimbursement because the required expenditure booking option is currently unavailable in APT 2.0. Accordingly, CEPT has been requested to make the necessary provision in APT 2.0 on priority to facilitate timely processing of reimbursement under the existing BYOD Scheme.
Other Guidelines Remain Unchanged
The order further states that all provisions of the earlier BYOD guidelines dated 25.06.2025, including eligibility conditions, reimbursement rules, minimum device specifications, reporting requirements, and operational guidelines, will continue to remain in force until further orders.
The extension of the BYOD Scheme to Branch Offices is expected to improve digital service delivery in rural areas while supporting Branch Office staff who use their own smartphones for official duties. By providing financial assistance for device usage and communication expenses, the Department aims to enhance efficiency and ensure seamless delivery of postal and financial services at the last mile.
