Government Issues Fresh Guidelines for Conducting Pension Adalats to Improve Pensioners’ Grievance Redressal

In a significant move aimed at strengthening pensioners’ grievance redressal mechanisms, the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoP&PW), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, has issued fresh guidelines regarding the conduct of Pension Adalats across Ministries, Departments, and Organizations.

According to the Office Memorandum dated 12 May 2026, the Government has reiterated the importance of Pension Adalats as an effective platform for resolving long-pending pension-related grievances. The move follows recommendations made by the Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in its 161st Report.

The Committee observed that the success of Pension Adalats largely depends on how effectively pensioners are informed in advance, especially those living in remote regions or those with limited access to digital platforms. The Government noted that Pension Adalats have consistently delivered excellent results, with nearly 75% of grievances being resolved on the spot during the last 12 Pension Adalats organized by the Department. Remaining cases were also settled through follow-up coordination with concerned Ministries and Departments.

Focus on Wider Awareness Campaigns

To ensure greater participation of pensioners, the Department has directed all Ministries and Departments to organize widespread awareness campaigns well before conducting Pension Adalats. The instructions emphasize that all eligible pensioners with pending grievances should receive timely information about the Adalats so they can participate effectively.

The Office Memorandum further states that information regarding Pension Adalats should be disseminated through multiple communication channels, including:

  • Pensioners’ Welfare Associations

  • Government offices

  • Pension Disbursing Authorities such as Banks, Post Offices, and Treasuries

  • Official websites and pension portals

  • SMS alerts

  • Social media platforms

Strengthening Pensioners’ Welfare

The latest directive reflects the Government’s continued efforts to improve transparency, accessibility, and efficiency in pension grievance handling. By encouraging proactive outreach and better communication, the Department aims to ensure that pensioners across the country, particularly senior citizens in rural and remote areas, can benefit from the Pension Adalat system.

The order was issued with the approval of the Competent Authority and signed by Dr. Pramod Kumar, Director, Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare.
