Department of Posts Updates Local Language Requirements for GDS Recruitment in Nagaland

Department of Posts Revises Local Language Criteria for GDS Engagement in Nagaland

The Department of Posts has issued a significant policy update regarding the engagement of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) in the State of Nagaland. Through an Office Memorandum dated 21 May 2026, the Department has reviewed and revised the existing local language requirements applicable to GDS recruitment in the state.

The revision follows a comprehensive review by the Postal Services Board and aims to better align the recruitment process with the linguistic diversity and ground realities of Nagaland.

As per the revised guidelines, candidates seeking engagement as GDS in Nagaland must have studied either English or Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject up to at least the 10th standard. In addition, applicants must possess knowledge of any one of the nineteen tribal local languages or dialects recognized by the Government of Nagaland through its notification dated 16 December 2025.

Recognizing that these tribal languages are currently not taught up to the 10th standard in schools, the Department has introduced an alternative mechanism for assessing language proficiency. Candidates can now establish their knowledge of the respective tribal language or dialect through a certification issued by the concerned Deputy Commissioner of the district.

The nineteen notified tribal languages and dialects include Angami, Pochury, Ao, Rengma, Chang, Sumi, Chakhesang, Sangtam, Konyak, Tikhir, Khiamniungan, Yimkhiung, Lotha, Zeliang, Phom, Garo, Mikir, Kuki, and Kachari.

The move is expected to enhance local participation in the postal network while ensuring that GDS employees are capable of effectively communicating with the communities they serve. By formally recognizing Nagaland's linguistic diversity, the Department of Posts has taken a step towards making rural postal services more inclusive, accessible, and responsive to local needs.

The revised language policy will be applicable for future GDS engagements in postal offices located across Nagaland and is expected to provide greater opportunities to candidates from various tribal communities of the state.
