India’s postal system is preparing for a major digital transformation. India Post has successfully tested a new technology-driven delivery system that could soon replace lengthy postal addresses with short digital IDs (Digital Address Codes), making parcel and mail delivery faster, smarter, and more accurate.

What Is the New Digital Address System?
Under the new system, people may no longer need to write full addresses containing:

- State
- PIN code

Successful Pilot Conducted Across Five States
The Department of Posts recently completed its first successful pilot project involving around 30 users across five states using Speed Post services.

- Only the recipient’s name and digital ID were written on the cover
- The system accurately identified the destination location
Following further testing, India Post is expected to roll out the system nationwide within approximately 18 months.
What Is DigiPIN?
The new system works using DigiPIN (Digital Postal Index Number), a next-generation addressing technology developed for highly precise location mapping.
Unlike traditional PIN codes that represent large geographic areas, DigiPIN divides the country into very small grids measuring approximately 4 metres × 4 metres. Each grid receives a unique alphanumeric code such as:

This allows postal staff to identify locations with far greater accuracy.
How DHruva Makes DigiPIN Easy to Use
Since remembering long DigiPIN codes may be difficult, India Post has introduced the DHruva system.
Users can convert complex DigiPIN codes into easy-to-remember digital IDs using a mobile application. For example:
