India Post Launches “Gyan Post” Service for Affordable Book Delivery

The Department of Posts has officially introduced a new postal service called “Gyan Post” through the Post Office (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2025. The notification was published in the Gazette of India on 28 April 2025 and came into effect from 1 May 2025.

Under the new regulations, the following types of books and study materials can be sent through Gyan Post:

  • Books prescribed for regular and correspondence courses by recognized educational boards and universities.

  • Publications issued by autonomous or statutory bodies under the Government.

  • Social, cultural, and religious literature published legally.

  • Textbooks and study materials used by candidates preparing for competitive examinations.

The service covers books in any language and also includes printed maps, charts, diagrams, music sheets, and similar educational content.

Important Conditions for Booking

India Post has specified several conditions for using the Gyan Post service:

  • Magazines, journals, and periodicals published regularly are not allowed.

  • Packets must clearly bear the inscription “Gyan Post.”

  • Books should not contain commercial advertisements except book lists or incidental announcements.

  • Each book must mention the printer or publisher’s name.

  • Commercial or business-related books are not permitted under this category.

  • Every packet must carry both the delivery address and sender’s return address.

The department has also clarified that packets violating these conditions may be treated as India Post Parcel-Retail items, and additional postage charges may be collected.

Tracking and Delivery Features

All Gyan Post articles will be sent as trackable items, ensuring better transparency and monitoring during transit. The packets will be transmitted through surface mode only. Customers can also avail value-added services such as:

  • Registration

  • Proof of Delivery (POD)

  • Insurance facility

Weight Limits and Postage Charges

The minimum weight for booking a Gyan Post packet is 300 grams, while the maximum permissible weight is 5 kilograms.

The Gazette notification also highlights that operational guidelines for booking, transmission, and delivery will be issued separately through administrative instructions from time to time.
